Training load and heart rate variability

Help us understand how training stress shapes recovery in endurance athletes by securely sharing your Intervals.icu data with our research group.

If you don't have an Intervals.icu account yet, you will find instructions below.

About the study

Our group at ISGlobal investigates the non-linear relationships between training load and heart rate variability (HRV), a widely used physiological marker of recovery and autonomic balance.

We have promising preliminary results, but our current sample size is limited. To test whether our findings generalise to a broader population of endurance athletes, we are inviting cyclists, runners, triathletes and other endurance athletes to share their training and HRV data with the study through Intervals.icu.

Participation is voluntary, your data is used only for research, and you can revoke access at any time from your Intervals.icu account.

How to participate

  1. Create a free Intervals.icu account

Sign up at intervals.icu. Intervals.icu is a free training-analysis platform widely used by endurance athletes and coaches.

  2. Connect your wearable directly to Intervals.icu

This step is essential. Without a direct device connection on Intervals.icu, your training data will not reach the study. Open Settings → External services on Intervals.icu and pick one:

Open the intervals.icu connections page →

    • Garmin Connect — the most common path. Works for any Garmin watch or bike computer.
    • Coros, Suunto, Wahoo, Polar, Whoop, Swift... — connect your device's native account directly to Intervals.icu.
    • Apple Watch / Fitbit — sync via Apple Health or Google Health Connect.

Do not connect via Strava. Intervals.icu's API is not allowed to expose Strava-sourced activities (Strava's terms forbid it), so we would see only empty entries. If your wearable currently uploads to Strava only, please add one of the direct Intervals.icu connections above.

If you use different devices to record overnight HRV and training activities, remember to sync both.

Once connected, Intervals.icu will automatically import your past activities and your daily wellness data (HRV, resting heart rate, sleep).

  3. Share your data with the study

Click the button below to connect your Intervals.icu account to the study. On the consent screen, please grant both permissions — activities and wellness. We need both to model how training load affects your recovery.

We never see your Intervals.icu password. The connection uses OAuth, the same secure mechanism that lets apps connect to Strava or Google. You can revoke access at any time from your Intervals.icu account settings.
